Total Cost of Quality in Steel Tube Manufacturing Inspection
What is your total cost of Quality? I ask this question often
and invariably not many get this answer right.
So I thought I would expand on it with this short read.
In a summary statement, the total cost of quality is the cost
of control to manufacture + the cost of failure to control. The cost of failure to control has both an
internal cost and an external cost.
The internal costs are the cost of failure + the cost to remake
the steel tube or pipe. The external
cost is the cost of containment at the client site. For steel
tube or pipe manufacturing inspection
this could mean unhappy clients, hours of reworks and incur unnecessary cost on
the final product delivery.
With identification of defects with quality control measures in
place, cost of quality is not about increasing the size of your quality control
department. Instead, it’s all about keeping the impact of defects on the
profitability of your business at a minimal. In other words reducing the cost of
failure. Logically, this means data collection, data
mining, process monitoring and detecting the defects immediately during the
manufacturing process. Followed by a sound quality assurance plan. Radian, a total cost of quality monitoring
system for steel tube and pipe plays a valuable role to effectively monitor
each aspect of the manufacturing process.
Radian works by monitoring inputs from devices, process and
other sources in real time. Apart from
check for defects, it acts as a data collector for the steel tube or pipe
process. Immediate intervention procedure
can be executed as Radian can alert the relevant personnel in the case of any
anomalies detected. This is made possible by its event-driven signals based on
the control recipes configured. Besides that, the events are recorded in a
database where they can be made available for further analysis. This provides a
systematic approach for improvement in the manufacturing process itself to
minimize such defects in the future.
In steel tube and pipe manufacturing process,
various factors could cost defects in the final product. Radian is a
comprehensive solution that monitors various parameters such as cut length,
straightness, diameter & ovality,
skelp and the welding process itself. It
is a powerful tool to help ensure the best finished-product is delivered to
clients. This will ultimately result in higher yields, a lower total cost of quality, and higher profit.
